Fahrenheit 451
How will you picture a future where text is not allowed? And that books do not have a place. I know that I can't, can you? Well, I know people that can. The characters in the book Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury lives without books. They can if they want but most won't because books are illegal. With the possession of books comes consequences. They live in a future where everything goes but books. Instead of saving lives and rescuing people from fires, firemen actually starts the fires but not to kill of lives but to burn up books.
The language used in this book, especially from the fire chief, Captain Beatty, can be said to be manipulative. Since the beginning of the novel, Cpt. Beatty plays around with the mind of the main character, Guy Montag. He manipulates Montag into thinking what they are doing, burning books, is the right thing to do. He makes it seem like a good thing and that books do not contribute anything to the world nor the people in the world. Cpt. Beatty controls the mind of Montag, who is a fireman, and the rest of the firehouse to believe that his way of thinking is right and that it is the only way of thinking.
You see... I don't think that it's right for someone to force someone else to think a certain way. Personally, I think that everyone has the right to think the way they want to think and if they're wrong about it, they'll learn from it. The good thing about life is that you get second shots at somethings and when you fail once, you learn from your mistakes, understand the consequences, and then you can start again. Like how people refer to this as turning a new leaf. Montag along with others should choose to think their own way and acknowledge books and understand them because they can bring a whole new perspective into their lives. I guess I'm really happy that Montag did and I'm proud of him; he should be proud of himself too :)
